Scriptures for Sunday October 28

Mark 1:21-34

The scribes of Jesus’ day were the experts in understanding and interpreting Scripture. They did not speak on their own authority, however, but rather quoted the interpretations given by various rabbis.

Jesus did not quote other rabbis. He spoke on his own authority. This astonished the people, who were accustomed to the teaching of the scribes. They were further amazed when Jesus demonstrated his authority by requiring an unclean spirit to obey him.

No doubt some of his listeners welcomed this amazing new rabbi. But others, finding comfort in tradition, would have been upset at such change and the power that clearly accompanied it.
