Scriptures for Sunday October 14

Isaiah 43:1-7

This passage shows repeatedly how precious God’s people are to Him. He calls them by name, and they are called by His name. He will go to great lengths to bring them back, no matter how far away they may be. But this does not mean that He will remove all troubles from their lives. They may find themselves overwhelmed as though by raging waters or raging fire. The promise, however, is that He will be there with them, and protect them through it.

Mark 1:14-20

Jesus’ message was not identical to that of John the Baptist, but similar enough that there is a sense of Jesus picking up where John left off when he was arrested. We know from the Gospel of John that some of Jesus’ first disciples had been followers of John the Baptist. Knowing that John had been arrested, they must have realized that following Jesus now could be a risky move. Yet when Jesus called them, there is no hesitation. They have heard and accepted his message, they turn from their former way of life, and trusting, follow him.
