Scriptures for Sunday August 19

1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14

Solomon began his reign with the awareness that he needed wisdom from God in order to be a good king. God was pleased with his desire for wisdom, and promised wisdom as well as riches and power. From the Biblical accounts of the rest of his life, we know that Solomon showed wisdom in some cases, but made terribly wrong choices in others. God gave him discernment to understand right and wrong, but Solomon still had to choose which to follow.

Ephesians 5:15-20

Christians in Ephesus are also exhorted to a life of wisdom. This means seeking God’s will rather than their own pleasures, and results in a life characterized by joyful fellowship and thanksgiving.
