Scriptures for Sunday May 13

Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Christian parents want to pass on their faith to their children and grandchildren, but sometimes aren’t sure how to go about it, especially if they’re not sure they can answer difficult questions about their faith. This passage in Deuteronomy provides guidance for them.

First, parents need to themselves love and obey God. Then they need to be diligent in teaching God’s Word to their children, taking opportunities in all their daily activities to talk about Him and His Word. While we don’t follow the practice of some Jews in literally tying boxes containing verses of Scripture on our hands and foreheads, we want knowledge of God’s Word just as present to our thoughts and actions. And when consistently live by God’s Word, our children will learn to follow our example.

John 2:1-12

The brief conversation between Jesus and his mother in this passage is one of those places where it would be nice to have more than just the words they said. So much of what we say to each other is conveyed by tone of voice, facial expressions, and gestures.

But Scripture only gives us those words, so what we have must be enough to understand the significance of the passage. Jesus did a sign, which manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. There is much we might wish to know about Jesus’ life, especially before the beginning of his public ministry. But what we have is enough so that, like the disciples, we put our trust in him.
