Scriptures for Sunday March 11

Jeremiah 29:11-13

These verses are popular for the encouragement they give to people facing difficult times. But people unfamiliar with the larger context in which these verses appear may take from them a message that is not there, leading to later disappointment.

God’s plan for His people, alluded to in this passage, included seventy years in exile. After that His people would return to the land of Israel, but few of any of those who heard this message from Jeremiah would be around to see that day. The message in the meantime was to accept the exile and make a home there for now, knowing that their descendants will have the opportunity to return to the land of their ancestors. Sometimes God’s plan for us is to accept very difficult circumstances, even when it is others who will benefit from the trials we are now enduring.

Romans 5:1-8

In this passage, Paul lists several wonderful gifts we have been given in Jesus Christ. We have peace with God, we receive grace, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. We even are made able to rejoice in suffering, by the Holy Spirit’s work in us. All this has been given to us, not because we deserved it – quite the opposite – but because of God’s love for us.
