Scripture for Sunday January 28

Matthew 25:31-46

Interpreters of this passage differ on who the “nations” are (everyone? only unbelievers? communities rather than individuals?), as well as who the “least of these” are (poor and oppressed Christian believers? Christian missionaries? all needy people?). And many struggle with understanding how this teaching about which people inherit the kingdom fits with passages that emphasize salvation by grace through faith.

But some things are clear. As we see throughout Scripture, God cares about the needy and expects His followers to care about them also, and express that care in practical ways. There are ways to serve God that may not seem particularly “religious.” And there will be people who think they meet with God’s approval but will be surprised at how far they fall short.
