Scripture for Sunday May 28

Jonah 4:1-11

Nineveh was one of the greatest cities in ancient times. It was considered one of the most beautiful cities, as well as being the capital of a very powerful empire. The people of Nineveh no doubt felt proud of their city and its dominant place in the world.

Even after they repented in response to Jonah’s preaching, they probably still would not have appreciated having their great city compared, in Jonah 4, to a plant that grew overnight, then died just as suddenly. But God could raise up or destroy a city as easily as a plant, and God made it clear that He ruled not only in sovereign power but also in compassion for those He had created.
