Scriptures for Sunday May 14

Colossians 3:12-17

Earlier in the chapter, Paul has listed the sinful behavior that Christians need to rid from their lives. There are churches that seem to focus particularly on the getting-rid-of-sin aspect of Christian living. Some other churches don’t like to seem judgmental or negative and only focus on the verses which follow, exhorting Christians to positive behavior.

But both are important. We have to end the sinful habits that displease God and hurt ourselves and others, and we also have to replace those habits with habits of holiness. The kind of life Paul describes might seem, to some, an unreachable ideal. But Paul clearly expects people to follow his teachings, and by the encouragement of one another and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are able to.

Philippians 1:3-11

Two important themes in Philippians are joy and sharing, and Paul starts out with a joyful prayer because of the Philippians’ sharing in the ministry of the Gospel. They share financially in the spread of the Gospel, they share in the grace of God, and they obviously share a close emotional bond with one another and with Paul.

Paul has mostly good things to say about the Philippian church, but even they are not a perfect church. Paul exhorts them to abound more and more in their love, with increasing knowledge and discernment of what is best, and he also expresses confidence that God will complete His work in and through them.
