Scriptures for Sunday November 6

Jonah 1:1-17; 3:1-10

Sometimes it seems we learn best by seeing an example of what not to do, rather than by being urged to do the right thing. In the book of Jonah, it is often Jonah who is showing us the wrong response to what God is doing in his life. When he is called to go to Nineveh, Jonah sets out in the opposite direction. When God sends a terrible storm, Jonah apparently resigns himself to death by drowning rather than beg God for a second chance to obey Him.

But God gives him the second chance anyway. This time Jonah obeys, and when he preaches (however reluctantly) to the people of Nineveh, they provide a very different kind of example in their response to God. Although presumably mostly ignorant of the God of Israel and with none of the advantages of Scripture or past experiences of God in their lives, they immediately respond in repentance, crying out to God to have mercy on them.
