Scriptures for Sunday October 23

2 Samuel 7:1-17

David is exuberant in his praise to God. In the previous chapter, he danced before God in celebration of bringing back the ark of the Lord, which represented the presence of God among His people. Now David wants to build what he considers a fitting house for such a great God.

God reminds David, through the prophet Nathan, that He does not need a house to live in. He does not need David at all, but by grace David is privileged to serve God. And by grace God will continue to have a relationship with David’s descendants, not just for a few generations but forever.

Luke 1:26-33

It has been centuries since Israel had a king of David’s line sitting on a throne. Many people probably wondered if God had forgotten His promise – or if the Scriptures that record God’s covenant with David had been mere propaganda by those eager to legitimize their political power, rather than the words of God Himself.

But God has not forgotten His promise. He will fulfill it, but in His own time and His own way. This son of David will be born far from the palaces and corridors of power, but one day he will inherit the throne and will rule forever.
