Scriptures for Sunday September 25

Genesis 37:3-8; 17b-22; 26-34; 50:15-21

The story of Joseph and his brothers makes for imaginative retellings. Some people see him as a dreamer with his head in the clouds, not really aware of the intense hatred his brothers feel toward him. Others make him out to be a bratty teenager, rubbing his brothers’ faces in his own status as favored son. Still others see the fault only in his father and brothers, while Joseph follows God faithfully through the surprising ups and downs of his life.

But Scriptures is not concerned with explaining his personality and motivations, but rather with showing God at work in the lives of His chosen people. The brothers do not come across well in the story, but they each became heads of the tribes of Israel. God had a plan, with each person and circumstance a small piece of working out His great purposes.
