Scriptures for Sunday September 4

2 Chronicles 7:11-20

Solomon had just finished the temple and dedicated it to God, asking God to hear the prayers made in that place. God answers that He has chosen this place and will be attentive to prayers made there.

It is no magic formula, however, that prayers made in this place will automatically bring God’s blessing. If God’s people are humble and pray and turn away from sin, He will hear and will answer. But if they turn away from God, disobeying Him and worshiping other gods, they will be judged severely.

Jude 1-4, 17-25

Just as the physical temple built by Solomon did not guarantee God’s blessing on His people, so being part of a local church now is no guarantee of a right relationship with God. There are those who try to pervert the teaching of grace, and those who are faithful to God must be faithful in standing for the truth.

There is a tendency, often, to stand for truth by being antagonistic to those who disagree, but Jude exhorts Christians to show mercy to those who go astray.
