Scriptures for Sunday July 31

Psalm 103:19-22

It is often not apparent in our world that God is ruling over it, but this psalm – like all of Scripture – asserts that God does rule over all. The angels serve Him faithfully and praise Him, and creation itself fulfills His will and glorifies Him. Unlike them, we sometimes wander from His will, but the earlier verses of the psalm remind us that God is gracious and forgiving.

Isaiah 46:5-10

Isaiah scoffs at those who worship an object of their own making, rather than the God who made them. It is easy for people in our society to assume we are better than those pagans, because we do not worship idols made of stone or metal. But any god that we have imagined for ourselves, rather than accepting the truth about God revealed in Scripture, is just as much an idol as those derided by Isaiah.

Romans 8:28-31

Knowing that God is sovereign over everything in our lives is a comfort when things just don’t go right. When we are what doesn’t go right, however, we may be tempted to think that God’s promises are for those who get it right more than we do. But He has also promised that those He has called, He will indeed fulfill His plan for, so that one day we will be without sin and rejoicing in His presence.
