Scriptures for Sunday June 19

Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus has just given examples of how not to pray. Don’t make a show of praying in public to impress people with your piety. And don’t use lots of words to try to impress God with your piety. Instead, he provides a model of prayer, encompassing within a handful of phrases all that is essential to prayer. It takes little time to say, but a lifetime to plumb the depths of meaning of this short prayer.

Colossians 4:2-6

In the preceding chapter Paul has given his readers numerous commands on living the Christian life. As he reaches his conclusion, he reminds them of the importance of prayer, without which they will lack the power to live out his instructions for godly living. He urges them to be steadfast and alert in prayer, because it is so easy not to be.
