Scripture for Sunday March 13

Mark 13:1-8, 24-37

Some Christians have seen Jesus’ prophecies about the end times as clues for determining a timetable for Christ’s return. But Jesus makes it clear that it is not given to us to know the timing. He lists various disasters that will precede the end, not as markers for our calendars, but perhaps to assure us that the widespread suffering that accompanies them is by no means a reason to give up hope, but rather to hope all the more because He is coming.

If we knew the timetable, it might be tempting to put off getting ready until just before He arrives, like students who wait until the night before the test to study. Instead, we are to be alert, living each day in readiness for His arrival.
