Scriptures for Sunday January 24

Mark 5:1-20

Many of the people healed by Jesus had friends and family who cared about them, who brought them to Jesus for him to heal. But the demon-possessed man in this story had no one. His uncontrollable behavior had caused the people of the community to drive him away, so that he lived among the tombs with the dead instead of the living.

His only “company” was the multitude of demons that had taken up residence in his body, and though he probably would very much have liked to get away from them, he was unable to, until a foreigner showed up, Jesus of Nazareth.

As formidable as the demons were, as uncontrollable as they had proved in all previous attempts to subdue the man, they were no match for Jesus. He commanded them to leave the man, and they went. Presumably in selecting the pigs for their next host, they had not planned on being immediately dumped into the lake, but in doing so they certainly demonstrated their inability to do anything but destroy.
