Scriptures for Sunday December 13

Psalm 113

People on the bottom rung in society know they are unlikely to receive notice – at least not in any good way – from people at the top. How much less likely would it seem that the Creator and Lord of all the universe would show kindness to them?

This psalm gives two examples of exactly that happening, a poor person lifted from utter poverty to sit with princes, and a barren woman experiencing the joy of motherhood. The Scriptures are full of many other examples, showing how different God is from people, and even from the gods imagined by many people.

Luke 1:5-20, 57-65

Zechariah and Elizabeth were not exactly on the bottom rung of society, since Zechariah was a priest and was serving God in the temple. But Elizabeth was barren, which was a disgrace for a woman in those days, and a cause of sorrow for both of them.

They had prayed for a child, yet it seems that Zechariah was not really expecting God to answer his prayer, since he finds it hard to believe the angel who announces that his prayer will be answered. He knew the Scriptures, yet it was only when God blessed him and his wife with a son in their old age that he really comprehended the reality of God’s grace.
