Scriptures for Sunday November 8

1 Kings 18:20-39

This passage provides a very dramatic demonstration of God’s power, as well as of the utter powerlessness of Baal. As we hear the story, we tend to focus on God’s power over natural objects, to make fire fall from heaven and consume not only the burnt offering but even the water and the stone. But Elijah points out that this event also shows God’s power to change people, as He turns the people of Israel back toward Himself.

Mark 9:2-8

Peter, James, and John spent a lot of time with Jesus. They probably thought they knew him pretty well. But in this event we call the Transfiguration, they saw Jesus, quite literally, in a whole new light. At the time, they were terrified. Only later, after he had risen from the dead, would they realize that they had had a brief glimpse of his divine glory, and find comfort in knowing the power of their risen Lord.
