Scriptures for Sunday September 20

Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-7

Laughter often results from being surprised. Sarah overheard Abraham’s visitors say that she would have a baby the following year, and the idea struck her as so ridiculous that she couldn’t help laughing. It was a laugh of disbelief, but that disbelief didn’t stop God from delivering on His promise.

Later Sarah laughed again when the baby was born. The idea that she could be a mother at her advanced age still felt surprising, but the evidence was right there. Now she laughed for joy that God had kept His seemingly incredible promise.

Mark 10:23-27

Jesus brings up a different example of God being able to do the impossible. In this case, the first surprise was that Jesus said it was impossible for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. The cultural assumption was that wealth was a sign of God’s blessing, so the rich may have thought they’d be first in line to enter the Kingdom.

Jesus declares it impossible, but then follows up by pointing out that nothing is impossible with God. It is a message of grace for us, that God accomplishes the impossible by receiving us into His Kingdom.
