Scriptures for Sunday June 7

Psalm 138

Giving thanks is a theme of many psalms. One aspect of this thanks-giving that we may sometimes miss is that it is more than an inward feeling of gratitude. Giving thanks in the psalms – and throughout the Old Testament – involves praising God aloud so that others come to know about God’s greatness and His goodness to us.

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1

Despite knowing the importance of giving thanks, both for our own spiritual health and to share God’s goodness with others, it is sometimes difficult to do. Paul and his companions have been suffering a variety of hardships, which he lists elsewhere in this letter. Many people in such circumstances would lose heart and lose hope.

Paul’s hope is not in circumstances, however, but in God. He sees God’s grace at work through it all, and gives thanks that God’s grace is reaching more and more people.
