Scripture for Sunday April 12

1 John 5:1-6

There are churches that focus so much on the importance of loving one another that they minimize the importance of faith in Jesus Christ. There are other churches that put their emphasis on the necessity of faith in Jesus Christ and give relatively little attention to the issues of loving one another.

John makes it clear that both are central to one’s relationship with God. Loving the Father and loving the Father’s children go hand in hand, and the one who is able to keep this command to love is the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

John 20:19-31

John’s Gospel is written to those were not eyewitnesses of the events he describes, but who came to faith later through the testimony of others. They have not seen the risen Lord with their own eyes, as his first disciples did, but they have believed without seeing, through the words of John and others.

We might wish to have our doubts satisfied by sight, as Thomas did. But God intends for the rest of us to believe based on the testimony we have heard and read, and Jesus pronounces those people blessed who come to faith in this way.
