Scriptures for Sunday February 15

Isaiah 49:5-13

The promises of abundant blessing in this passage would have been good news to people who had experienced great hardships. They looked forward to God fulfilling the promises made long ago to the people of Israel. But God says here this it is too small a thing just to bring these blessings to Israel. God’s plan is much bigger, to bring salvation to the entire world.

Matthew 28:16-20

These verses contain what has become known as the Great Commission, Christ’s instruction to his disciples to go out and make disciples of people all over the world. As he taught them, they will teach others, not just to know the truth but to live according to it. This calling may seem beyond what we can do, and apart from Christ it is, but he promises his authority and his presence with us.

1 Peter 4:8-11

Peter’s instructions to believers underscore the importance of community. None of the commands given in these verses can be carried out apart from interactions with other people. Love, hospitality, speaking, and serving are all things that we do with and for others. And as with Christ’s commandment to make disciples, these instructions require “the strength that God provides.”
