Scriptures for Sunday September 14

Deuteronomy 7:7-11

Knowing they were the chosen people of God, the Israelites may sometimes have thought it was because they were somehow better than other people. But Moses reminds the people that God chose them because He was keeping a promise He had made to Abraham, to bless his descendents and make them a great nation. Because God was faithful to them, they are exhorted to be faithful to Him.

Psalm 89:1-9

This psalm is a joyous song of praise for God’s faithfulness. The word “faithfulness” is repeated over and over – eight times in the entire psalm, and four times just in these nine verses. In addition, it speaks of God’s steadfast love again and again, and emphasizes that it lasts forever.

Hebrews 10:19-25

People who worry about whether they are good enough to please God will always feel a sense of hesitation to approach God, an anxiety about whether they have done enough. But the writer of Hebrews assures us that on the basis of the completed work of Christ we can approach God with confidence and assurance of forgiveness. This is no reason to be complacent, however. Instead, we are exhorted to be faithful, as God is, and to encourage each other to do good works.
