Scriptures for Sunday May 11

Acts 2:42-47

Following Jesus has never been intended to be a solitary pursuit. From the beginning of the church at Pentecost, people who responded to the message of the Gospel have joined themselves together. They learn God’s Word together, they pray together and eat together. They worship and praise God together. And they share with those among them who are in need.

1 Peter 2:19-25

The book of 1 Peter gives several reasons to endure suffering patiently and even with joy. One of these is that by so doing we follow Christ’s example. Rather than turning on those who treated him unjustly, Christ entrusted himself to God, who is just.

John 10:1-10

We may find it puzzling that the metaphors shift as we read this passage. First Jesus seems to be the shepherd, but then he calls himself the door through which the sheep enter or exit the sheepfold. Later in the chapter he calls himself the shepherd.

What is clear is that the relationship with Jesus is essential. Others who try to get at the sheep have no such relationship and bring death and destruction. The sheep know they have a relationship with their shepherd and that their lives depend on him. They can trust him completely because of this relationship, because he is willing to die for them.
