Scriptures for Sunday February 16

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Theologians have written many books about the sovereignty of God and the free will of humankind, and the Bible teaches both. In this passage in Deuteronomy, however, the emphasis is on the choices that we make.

We can choose life, which means to choose God – not just to believe in Him but to live the way He wants us to on a daily basis. This choice will lead to God’s blessing. For the Israelites, that meant living in the land God had promised to them.

Or we can choose death, choosing not to follow God, and forfeiting His blessings. Over and over throughout the Old Testament, when the Israelites did not follow God, He allowed their enemies to defeat them. This passage would remind them why.

Psalm 119:1-8

The psalmist was dedicated to choosing God’s ways. He knew that blessing came from knowing God’s commands and keeping them, and he wanted to follow them wholeheartedly.
