Scriptures for Sunday July 28

Psalm 85

The Scriptures provide many examples of how God has delivered people in the past. Remembering that history gives the psalmist confidence to ask God for deliverance from present difficulties. And this confidence develops into hope for a future characterized by peace and righteousness.

Colossians 2:6-19

Those who have come to faith in Christ are sometimes unsure what is required to live the Christian life. Paul warns the Colossians against those who would mislead them. Some people will try to convince them that they need to follow certain human traditions, which may involve certain rituals, ascetism, or mysticism.

Their Christian life began, however, not with human activity, but with what God did. God forgave their sin and made them alive together with Christ. Likewise, growth in Christ comes not by following a set of regulations, but from being connected to Christ, growing in faith just as we grew physically, with the source of life being God.
